Spot on Sereina Steinemann

A pair of glasses, children’s books, advertising slogans or a shoe display—Sereina Steinemann (*1984) takes a close look at the everyday presented in her paintings, drawings and zines. While the artist shares her interest in the world of commodities with Pop Art, she presents these ordinary things with great affection and with a smile, instead of as cool-sleek still lifes. Thanks to the simplicity of the motif and the painting style her works subsequently make a touching impact.

With the series Qualität ist unsere Stärke (Quality is our Strength), Sereina Steinemann explores the language of advertising. She also uses the well-known logo of a crisps package so as to focus on her doubt as a painter. For the exhibition, the artist also produced her first sculptures. These are inspired by old-fashioned figurative advertising—from the oversized croissant positioned outside the bakery during opening hours to the huge ice-cream cone in front of the ice-cream parlour. Sereina Steinemann’s Schlüssel (Keys) are also mobile and are not always standing at the same spot in the exhibition room. Or are they perhaps even put away over night when the museum is closed?

Sereina Steinemann was awarded the City of Lucerne’s publication prize spot on. Volume 21 of this series will provide a comprehensive insight into her creative work.
