Thematic Retrospective of Gabriel de la Mora at Museo Jumex

Museo Jumex presents Gabriel de la Mora: La Petite Mort, a thematic exhibition of the artist’s practice over the past twenty years.

Gabriel de la Mora (Mexico City, 1968) is known for transforming materials through processes that appear almost alchemical, creating exquisite objects and seductive surfaces. His practice includes technically complex methods, such as the dissection and assembly of butterfly wings or human hair into geometric compositions, as well as the recovery of historic, timeworn ceilings transferred onto canvas. At other times, he employs elemental forces such as fire or water, which act upon paintings, prints, and papers until they are eroded to the edge of degradation.

Curated by Tobias Ostrander, La Petite Mort explores both the appeal of De la Mora’s surfaces and the unconscious impulses and desires that have been a consistent theme in his work. The exhibition title, in French, refers both to death itself and to ecstatic sexual pleasure, as “la petite mort” is a synonym for orgasm. The presentation unfolds across six thematic sections related to the body, erasure, heat, the edge of desire, touch, and the viewer’s pleasure.

Following its presentation at Museo Jumex, the exhibition will travel to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO).
