Founded in 1991 by Mercedes-Benz Japan, today's Mercedes-Benz Art Scope Award is the fruit of a cooperation with the Daimler Art Collection that provides a Japanese/German cultural exchange aimed at fostering deeper mutual knowledge of each country's contemporary art scene.
Artists selected by the jury are granted stays of three months each in Tokyo and Berlin in order to deepen their understanding of their host country's culture, to make contacts, and to develop new projects and ideas. Their works are subsequently exhibited at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and at Daimler Contemporary in Berlin.
Visions of Exchange presents the last eleven award winners from 2009 to 2017. The group-presentation opens dialogues about culture as a creator of meaning and identity, about singularity and foreignness, and about the significance of concepts that cross cultural boundaries in a globalized world.
