Body, Genre and Identity of La Conservera

Murcia: The sixth cycle of expositions at La Conservera, featuring works by fine artists Pilar Albarracin (Seville, Spain-1968), William Cordova (Lima, Peru-1971), Kalup Linzy (Florida, U.S.A.-1977) and Francesco Vezzoli (Brescia, Italy-1971), will remain open till June 26.

The Veronicas Hall is becoming from this cycle on the fifth space of La Conservera with an exhibit by French artists Brice Dellsperger (Cannes, France-1972) and Jean-Luc Verna (Nice, France-1962).

The six artists share common worries and interests. All of them portray themselves through characters from the history of the arts, literature, pop culture, the star system and the soap operas. In a way, the cycle homes in on the double personality syndrome, the artist’s unfolding into varied physical and psychic entities. The body, the genre, the identity, the sexuality or the desire are some of topics dealt with here.

Francesco Vezzoli: Greed, A New Fragrance By Francesco Vezzoli (Space 1): InGREED, A New Fragrance by Francesco Vezzoli, the artist repeats the strategy and esthetics of the commercial launch of a perfume. It’s all about a project produced by the artist back in 2009 and solely exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery in Rome. Vezzoli has exposed in different institutions in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Milan, Venice, Oporto, Turin, Bologna and Geneva.

Pilar Albarracin: Coreografías para la salvación (Space 2):In Coreografías para la salvación (Choreographies for Salvation), Pilar Albarracin realizes her artistic interest through the details of the guild world and social interventions. It’s a proposal that splices into her Memories of Spain (2008-2010), since it’s based on a ritual exported to the utmost at that time: the flamenco, and now the Holy Week. Pilar Albarracin has exposed in Tokyo, Lisbon, Paris, Malaga, Stockholm, Lima, Huelva and Seville.

Kalup Linzy: Melodies, Drama, Limerence (Space 3): Kalup Linzy is one of the most interesting multidisciplinary artists of recent years. Basically focused on video and performance, his proposals bank on a very personal reading as he lays his hands on a variety of characters he plays. In his melodramas, Linzy hinges on the exploration of these means. Kalup Linzy ha exposed in New York, Miami, Miami and Los Angeles.

William Cordova: yawar mallku (royalty, abduction & exile) (Space 4):

For his first individual exhibit in a European space, La Conservera has come up with lando, landu (yawar malku), a central piece in the exhibition, a monumental sculpture built in overlapped wooden layers that generate parallelisms with the different diasporas of the American landscape and the land art of the 1960s and the early 70s. The Cordova sculpture will start wearing out and will return to the earth, transforming the document of the object-sculpture in a sacred place, an impression of an experience that can only be shared by oral tradition –through a conversation or the text/image. William Cordova (Lima, Peru-1971) has exposed in Austin, Texas; Zurich, Berlin, Miami and New York.
