Personal Exhibition by Los Carpinteros in Spain

Inaugurated yesterday, October 15, Es Baluard, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Palma de Mallorca, invites viewers to visit Los Carpinteros’ (Cuba, Dagoberto Rodriguez and Marco Castillo) first personal exhibition in a Spanish institution.

Commissioned by Daniela Zyman, the exhibition’s main artworks are part of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary collection (T-B A21), founded by Francesca von Habsburg, daughter of Baron H.H. Thyssen-Bornemisza. Ms. von Habsburg met Marco, Dagoberto and Alexandre Arrechea (member of the team until 2003) back in 2001 in Havana. She has followed the career of Los Carpinteros for years and considers their creations "important part of her contemporary art collection and indispensable contribution to art all over the world.”

Artworks playing the leading role in the exhibition are Cama (2007); Portaviones (2005), in which this sign of belligerence and conflict transmutes miniature swimming pool; Frio Estudio del Desastre (2005), accurate reconstruction of a wall that’s been penetrated by a missile; and Espejos de Agua (2001), in which a series of ancient drawing tables, covered by water, are illuminated by desktop lamps. Likewise, the curatorship is looking forward to making reference to the drawing-sculpture (object) relation, by showcasing a series of large-scale watercolors that display “designs”, studies on objects. So, viewers will have the opportunity of appreciating the wide theme spectrum explored by both artists.

There are two publications accompanying the exhibition (to be officially opened today): one catalogue edited by Es Baluard with information on the artworks and monograph by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, which provides an exhaustive vision on artistic practices used by this collective between 2003 and 2010.

Los Carpinteros. Handwork – Constructing the World. Obras de la coleccion Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporaryis the title of this exhibition, open through January 22, 2012.
