BALANCING POWERS by Mabel Arce

The DELSOL ST Gallery in Santander is presenting thru March 31 a personal exhibit full of individual and artistic challenges by local artist Mabel Arce. It’s all about a set of fifteen pieces whose main topic –construed as economics and politics- make the rest of the elements spin around it.

Artistically speaking, Arce works out the exercise of power by building a sea, made up of numerous waves of shot lace, intertwined, woven and dangling in the air. Obviously, there’s a desire to move beyond painting, supported by the intervention of musician and songwriter Jose Ramon Garcia Vazquez, in charge of adding a new scope to the visual proposal.

“Balancing Powers: Associations and Contradictions” is divided in three spaces. The gallery’s main hall takes viewers into a singular atmosphere: an installation in the middle, the huge silky sea, is complemented with nine 2D pieces splayed on cloth and arranged in a very vertical format, plus a large square laid out in the background. And all this much is accompanied by Garcia Vazquez’s music. The small hall is wallpapered with drawings likened to the working process. To close the exhibit, there’s a work standing at the entrance of the gallery: Gold Necklace, Wings of Words.

Mabel Arce (Santander, 1970) graduated from Fine Arts in Painting. She has conducted workshops and courses in New York, Rome, India, Kenya and Tanzania. In the year 2000, she won the 15th BMW Prize in the category of painting. Her artworks have been exposed in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Santander, at the Ateneo de Madrid and in a number of exhibits carried out by prestigious art galleries in Spain and overseas.
