Maikel Menendez’ City

Cuban architect and painter Maikel Menendez’s solo show, titled Geometrias compartidas, will be showcased at Galeria Atelier of Barcelona through September 29.

The exhibition includes ten urban landscapes where the artist shows a peculiar view of “the city”. He takes a general point of view, examines it and tests a path where the abstract and the figurative shake hands. Characterized by his education as an architect, Menendez reflects volumes, perspectives of buildings, some of which are unfinished, and others include picture clippings as collage. The abstract touches are given by the combination of textures and the freedom of brush strokes that include paint jets in the “landscapes” to amplify the dynamics of the scene.

Maikel uses an austere palette of colors, with grays and sepias, but his pieces are much more intense when made in black and white. Furthermore, the geometric planes and chiaroscuros deliver a sort of cold view, where life can only be sensed due to some lights.

Maikel Menendez Gonzalez (Havana, 1973)graduated at San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy and Jose Antonio Echeverria Higher Polytechnic Institute’s Architecture Faculty. In 2005, he received a mention at the 5th Cuban Contemporary Architecture Hall, Santa Clara, Cuba; and, in 2001, the Prize awarded by the Construction Ministry of his country.
