Cuba’s Fine Arts Museum to exhibit Paisaje, by Tomas Sanchez on the 12th Havana Biennial

By: Adalys Pérez Suárez

Thirty years after Cuban painter Tomas Sanchez showed his artworks in one of the temporary rooms of the National Museum of Fine Arts (in Spanish, MNBA), he returns to this institution to be part of the program of collateral exhibitions during the 12th Havana Biennial, the most important event of visual arts in our country.

If in 1985 the MNBA exhibited a retrospective of this artist, this new exhibit that will be inaugurated on May 23, deals with unknown pieces, recently created in the Republic of Costa Rica, where he has been living for years.

Pintura (Painting) is the title of this exhibit curated by Hortensia Montero, containing twelve canvasses, mostly large-format, which can be seen by the public until September 28, 2015, at the temporary room located on the third floor of the Cuban Art Building.

Furthermore, a white canvas will be exhibited at the lobby of this room, where visitors may make their own strokes along with those of Tomas Sanchez’.

Landscape, the artist's favorite modality, to which occasionally he incorporates landfills, is the focus of this exhibition, revealing mysticism and love for nature which have always accompanied that who remains watchful to the conceptual in his works up to creating the titles with which he names his paintings.

Two of them: Orillas and Entre silencios, will make us recall the viewer previous stages of this hyperrealist artist, precious in his quest to convey emotions provoked to him by the natural environment.

In April, last year, the Havana's public had the chance of enjoying a photographic exhibit at Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, by this versatile artist who has also developed with success engraving, ceramics, design and drawing.

Besides Tomás Sánchez`s art sample, other exhibitions by Cuban artists Gustavo Pérez Monzón, Wilfredo Prieto, Rául Cordero, Alexandre Arrechea  and Luis Enrique López will be inaugurated next Saturday at the MNBA, all them included at the collateral program of the 12th Havana Biennial.
