Cubans Skate in Fake Ice During The Sunny Havana Biennial

Havana.- The possibility of practicing ice skating, or something like that, attracts many Cubans to the sunny so called Cold Corner, one of the XII Havana Biennial proposals.

Since its opening to the public, yesterday, the project of the American artist Duke Riley welcomes enthusiasts, who already knew skating or have just started learning by forcing buttocks on the synthetic surface.

It's about an ice substitute, coated with a special lubricant that allows you to slide over a track, hat was mounted in few days by a national squad. It was particularly advised by Riley.

He came up with this idea by inquiring about the sporting culture of the Cuban people. The artist discovered that in the middle of the 20th century it existed in Cuba a team of ice hockey,a lost tradition.

Riley defends the existence of spaces that are apparently alien to their surroundings. In this case it is about an ice rink under the hard Cuban sunshine, barely separated from the Havana coast by an avenue.

'I have much respect for Cuba, especially for facing many strong Nations and not going down,' Riley saids. He mentioned it as one of the reasons that brought him to this country and its biennial.
