Carlos Acosta Begins Auditions to Found Company in Cuba

With the purpose of founding a ballet company on the island, prominent Cuban leading dancer Carlos Acosta carried out auditions at the Fernando Alonso National Ballet School of this capital for the selection of its members.

 

Acosta, current figure of the Royal Ballet of London in the UK, convened an audition for all candidates across the country with vocational training, with the intention of creating a group attached to the Dance Center of Havana, made up by 16 dancers -eight women and eight men.

 

Interested artists auditioned on Monday and Tuesday in a ballet classes to measure their skills in classical technique and contemporary dance.

 

The future director will complete the formation of finally chosen dancers with various dance modalities, in which folklore and contact dance -one of the modern techniques that revolutionized the language and ways of carrying out performances- are included.

 

According to the dancer, winner of Cuba’s National Dance Prize, the strength of his students in the art of dancing will be essential to encourage participation in the projects of great international choreographers, since among his main purposes it is to found a company that promotes Cuban talent, not only of dancers but also of choreographers.

 

Carlos Acosta, aged 42, has danced with numerous companies, including the English National Ballet, Cuba’s National Ballet Company, the Houston Ballet and the American Ballet Theater.
