Carlos Garaicoa. Stories, as lines, drawn over me

Curated by Gerardo Mosquera, Stories, as lines, drawn over me will be the first exhibition exclusively dedicated to the use of drawing in Garaicoa´s body of works. The exhibition that unites pieces from 1993 to 2014 attempts to expose the importance of this language in his work.

Photography and drawing have gifted his work with that hybrid quality in which the gaze is conducted by duality: a photographic document, an archival image always in tension or balance with the drawing. In this coexistence where imaginary spaces, invented architecture, the alternative images that complete the emptiness of space or the ruins, or where a subtle comment reveals the violence of the city and the urban enviroment arises. The recurrent displacement of the image in Garaicoa’s essential photographic work has always encountered another visibility system, one that succeeds in articulating a critical-poetical discourse within the language of the draftsman, a recurrent personal shelter that takes momentary distance from all the technological paraphernalia imposed by the infinite methods of image reproduction in contemporary societies.
