Septeto Santiaguero Nominated to the 2016 Grammy Awards

By: Alain Valdés Sierra

Just earlier today was made public the list of nominees to the 58th Grammy Awards—presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences—and it is indeed great news for Cuban music to have the prizewinning album No quiero llanto. Tributo a Los Compadres among the selected ones to compete in the Best Tropical Latin Album category.

The news is like the last straw since this album has won awards in two important previous contests: Cubadisco 2015, in Traditional Son category, and in last November’s Latin Grammy as Best Traditional Tropical Album.

The double album includes a selection of the songs by the mythical duet Los Compadres; it was recorded as a joint work between the members of Septeto Santiaguero and the famous Dominican singer Jose Alberto El Canario, who did not stop to move influences and add several other renowned artists within Cuban and world music to the recording like Eliades Ochoa, Oscar de Leon, Andy Montañez, Tiburon Morales, Aymee Nuviola and the centenarian Conga de Los Hoyos, just to mention some.

No quiero llanto… was available by Los Canarios Music record label and it is distributed in Cuba by EGREM. Since its first moments in the market, it began to be considered by the critics as a firm bet for the best traditional music from a more contemporary vision, this time with the way Septeto Santiaguero performs this genre.

Precisely when Buena Vista Social Club is saying farewell to the stages, the Septeto Santiaguero emerges as a world class group, and there are no few people claiming it will be the one taking the best of our traditional music to every part of the world.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards is scheduled for next February at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, United States.
