Baselitz, Richter, Polke, Kiefer: The Early Years of the Old Masters

In the sixties, the figurative paintings of Baselitz, Richter, Polke and Kiefer challenged the primacy of abstraction in response to an era characterized by challenges and upheavals, utopias and reorientations, power and protest.

Focusing on the "early years" of each of the four German masters, this exhibition will feature an exceptional ensemble of 100 works. It will shed light on this important phase in German history at a time when Baselitz was painting heroes torn asunder, Polke and Richter were unmasking the absurdity and emptiness of the consumption, and Kiefer was exposing the historical roots of the so-called "Third Reich".

Curated by Götz Adriani, a close friend of the artists, this exhibition will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue featuring interviews and a very personal text by Polke.

The exhibition of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg Baselitz - Richter - Polke - Kiefer: The Early Years of the Old Masters is a cooperation with the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
