Artist Carlos Bunga (Porto, 1976) presented his exhibition Inhabit the Contradiction at the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, curated by Rui Mateus Amaral, on view from November 8, 2025, to March 30, 2026. The show featured the artist’s largest installation to date — a meditation on absence, impermanence, and reinvention.
Using fragile and provisional materials, Bunga created Forest (2025), a monumental cardboard structure that enveloped viewers, evoking spaces of transient shelter. The exhibition also included works from the CAM Collection and extended beyond the gallery space, offering an experience shaped by memory, transformation, and the convergence of home, body, mind, and universe.
For the opening, the artist invited dancers from the former Ballet Gulbenkian (1965–2005) to return and interact with his work, creating a dialogue between movement, space, and memory.
Through this exhibition, the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian reaffirmed its commitment to contemporary creation and to projects that explore time, matter, and the spectator’s experience.
Carlos Bunga, born in Porto in 1976, is internationally recognized for his use of ephemeral materials such as cardboard, adhesive tape, and paint to construct temporary architectures that transform exhibition spaces. His work has been shown at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), Serralves Museum (Porto), Whitechapel Gallery (London), and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
