Memling Now: Memling in contemporary art

Considered as one of the most important Flemish primitives, Hans Memling (1430-1494) painted no fewer than six masterpieces for the medieval "St.-Janshospitaal," among which the world-renowned Ursula Shrine. Throughout the centuries, Memling has had a conspicuous influence on other masters, including Dürer and Raphael, and his work is still a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists, too.

For Memling Now, Musea Brugge has invited five contemporary artists who have found, and still find, inspiration in Memling's work, asking them to take part in a project combining the modern and the traditional.

On display are new and pre-existing works by David Claerbout (Belgium) and Diana Al-Hadid (US) as well as a series of early works by Joseph Kosuth (US) – one of the forefathers of conceptual art, and paintings by the African-American artist Kehinde Wiley and by Iran's Aydin Aghdashloo.
