MEMORIES & DECONSTRUCTIONS: Evelyn Espaillat at MAM

The Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic opened Friday an individual exhibit by renowned photographer Evelyn Espaillat entitled Memories & Deconstructions, which includes nearly 40 pieces (some award-winning pieces in national biennials and contests) and others that were handpicked from different creative stages by Amable Lopez Melendez, the exposition’s curator.

The artist –Melendez explains- stood out domestically in the 1990s under a different sign, in a period of time in which there’s a noticeable implication of women in the arts during “the imaginary-reflexive deconstruction of memory, the female condition, the social reality, the urban space, the culture of violence, the tokens of identity, their corporality and their own existential devastations by means of the creative photographic action.”

In addition to the artists, the opening ceremony was attended by MAM director Maria Elena Ditren; Ana Bonetti, president of the Caminantes por la Vida Foundation, and Amable Lopez Melendez, curator of both the exhibition and the cultural institution attached to local Ministry of Culture.

Benefits coming from this exhibit –it will remain open thru early June- will be funneled into the Caminantes por la Vida Foundation.
