Monte Azul: Tourism and Art in Costa Rica

Monte Azul Contemporary Art (MACA), a one-and-only art project nestled in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle, came into being in 2005 and has caught on due to its unconventional of delivering the experience of art and nature to the public all in just one piece.

Within the 50 hectares of the private reserve up in the mountains of southern Costa Rica, hemmed in by lavish tropical rainforests, customers revel in accommodations full of style, exquisite cuisine and an eye-popping art collection. With trekking, birdwatching, swimming and other outdoor activities, guests can choose from a variety of options and learn from certain artistic techniques, like monotype.

What’s more, guests can also meet artists in the flesh and be a part of the creative process because MACA grants scholarships to young Costa Rican artists. This action singles them out of the galleries and their collection-oriented processes, let alone gives them a chance to enjoy hotels in which art is one of their conveniences.

Carlos Rojas, co-owner and head curator, has 20 years of experience under his belt as a curator, artist and gallery owner in San Francisco, California. Mr. Rojas says the initial ideal –it has lived out to date- was “to combine our passion for the artistic creative process with that part that has to do with the galleries, with our love for the environment and for Costa Rica.

The art created and sold by Monte Azul hinges directly on Costa Rican artists, with little or no access at all to the international market trendsetters. On the other hand, the customer takes back home a high-quality work of art that, at the same time, carries a meaning of its own and stands for a very personal keepsake of his or her stay in Costa Rica.
