Pedro Peña Gil: Between the lines

Pedro Peña Gil, winner of the 39th Tapiró Award of Painting at the Biennal d'Art 2014 with the work Yellow on black scratch, is presenting his most recent work, the Between the lines exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art until April 5th.

According to Antonio Labella, Pedro Peña makes an invitation to go into a world full of poetical abstractions with a number lines apparently at random. Some of these lines are included in the painting scratching the surface, while other are placed with more paint. The lines mark the rhythm of the reading related to the magma of the color and shapes covering that space. There is like a tension between two planes, between a purely materialistic base related to the relaxation and a formula of lines marking a more complex state. Like seams, the lines keep united as a whole.

Recently, in his tour through experimentation, the artist has brought these formulas to other creative languages. As expected, due to his long carrier as a photographer, he cannot resist to try his works in pictures. He has taken the picture to work with the emotional element, dropping or adding matter until the right moment, which he considers to show that the fragment belongs to him. Both planes are not independent, photography and lines are closed to turn into a visual creation.
