Fernando Alcocer’s Colors

By Ricardo Potts

Fernando Alcocer Benito had been exhibiting his first solo show, La vida es de color, at Espacio Cultural Excelencias through June 30; undoubtedly the first of many other showcases to come.

Deeply engaged with creation as the core of his life, and professionally devoted to art during the last fourteen years, Alcocer didn’t study at academies, but came out of the passion for painting as expression and fulfillment mean, as well as a way “to reach out the people”.

“People like art or not. In my opinion it isn’t about running profound analysis on it, or defining some nuances –although these tests are valid. Art must touch people’s hearts.”

“From a certain point of view, I paint to express myself, not to communicate. And it’s even better if communication comes attached. But, for me, painting is all about pulling out the inner world we all have within.”

As for the connection among his work and certain movements or trends, he expressed: “My pieces are linked to abstract expressionism, but I think that when artists try to express themselves they can’t enclose, or delimit, their freedom. So, sticking to some way to do can negate the essence of creative impulse as such. Artists must only follow their plans, what they want to reveal, what comes from inside. And once they have made it, they can reach out the people, and this is the ultimate purpose of artworks…”

On his projects and aspirations, he commented: “I’m looking forward to aiming my efforts at something that excites me. Painting, art, is not business, and I think that middle-level people should understand it. All of my pieces contain a brief synopsis of what has inspired me, of what I want to express. Not for the people to watch it from that criteria only, but to back up the reading of some spectators that don’t understand the artwork, so when you provide any clue they watch it from a different point of view, they can get it better.”

“Reality can be watched from different approaches. That’s the reason why I say that despite the abstractions, I paint realities that are fulfilled during the exhibition. Because an artist who can’t exhibit is like a book with blank pages.”
